Chapter 7 - The New Home

By the middle of November, the first heavy snow of the winter began to fall over the city, turning Willow Creek Estates into a breathtaking winter wonderland of white roofs and glowing lanterns.

A moving truck stood parked outside Cottage 14—the charming, three-bedroom stone cottage sitting directly next door to Walter’s Cottage 12.

Julian Vance had completely renovated the cottage over two weeks, knocking down walls to create a spacious, sunlit kitchen with maple cabinets, installing central heating, and building a custom wooden bookshelf that covered an entire wall of the living room.

Lily ran through the front door of her new home, her boots making soft thuds against the warm hardwood floor.

"Mom! Look!" Lily squealed, running into her new bedroom.

The room was painted a soft golden yellow. A large canopy bed sat near the window, covered in a thick, fluffy white duvet. Beside the bed sat a brand-new wooden desk with a brass lamp, and stacked neatly on the shelves were fifty brand-new books—everything from botany guides to fairy tales.

Outside her window, through the falling snowflakes, she could see Cottage 12.

On the porch of Cottage 12, the brass pull-chain lantern was already lit, casting a warm yellow light across the snow-covered lawn. And sitting in his white chair on the porch, wrapped in a thick wool blanket with a warm mug of tea, sat Walter, waving at her window.

Lily waved back with both hands, her heart bursting with happiness.

Clara walked into the bedroom, holding two mugs of hot cocoa topped with whipped cream. She looked at her daughter, then around the warm, beautiful room, still finding it hard to believe that this was their life now.

"Do you like it, bug?" Clara asked softly, kneeling beside her.

"I love it, Mom," Lily said, throwing her arms around Clara’s neck. "It smells like pine wood and warm cookies."

"No more leaky ceilings," Clara whispered into her hair, tears of gratitude shining in her eyes. "No more dark fire escapes. No more worrying about the rent."

That evening, the Harper family hosted their very first housewarming dinner.

Sitting around the large oak dining table in Cottage 14 were Clara, Lily, Walter, Julian, and Detective Rodriguez, who had become a close family friend after the rescue at the pier.

Clara had spent the entire afternoon preparing her famous potato soup, serving it in big ceramic bowls with warm, crusty bread and fresh butter.

Julian took a spoon of the soup, closed his eyes, and smiled. "Ms. Harper... I’ve eaten at three-star Michelin restaurants in Paris and Tokyo, but this is officially the best soup I have ever had in my life."

"It's the potato soup!" Walter declared loudly, tapping his spoon against his bowl with a joyful grin. "Lily told me about it! I told you it was better than the clubhouse catering!"

Everyone around the table burst into warm, genuine laughter.

As the snow continued to fall softly outside, coating the glass windows in delicate icy patterns, Julian raised his glass of sparkling cider.

"I'd like to propose a toast," Julian said, looking around the table at the faces illuminated by the candlelight. "To the rules we teach our children. To Clara, who taught Lily that kindness is the greatest wealth of all. And to Lily... the smallest person in this room, who possessed the biggest heart in this city."

They clinked their glasses together, the crystal making a clear, bell-like ring that echoed through the warm house.
