CHAPTER 3 – THE FALL OF THATCHER AND BEATRIX

The name echoed in my mind long after the phone call ended.

Elliot Cross.

A name I had buried.

A chapter of my life I had closed.

Or at least, I thought I had.

For years, I convinced myself that some people belonged in the past.

That betrayal had an expiration date.

That wounds eventually stopped hurting.

But I was wrong.

Because some people did not disappear.

They waited.

They watched.

And when they saw the right moment…

They came back to take what they believed they deserved.

I sat alone in my office, staring at the city lights outside the window.

The Vale mansion was quiet.

Too quiet.

A few days ago, I would have found comfort in that silence.

Now it felt like the silence before a storm.

I opened the drawer of my desk and pulled out an old photograph.

A younger version of myself looked back at me.

Twenty-seven years old.

Hair pulled back.

A confident smile.

Standing beside a construction site.

The beginning of my first major real estate project.

Before the mansions.

Before the billions.

Before Thatcher.

Before all of this.

And beside me was Elliot.

My former partner.

My friend.

The man who knew everything.

He knew how I thought.

He knew my strategies.

He knew my weaknesses.

And worst of all…

He knew my heart.

I remembered the day everything changed.

The day I discovered he had been secretly selling information about my investments.

The day I realized the person standing beside me was actually trying to destroy me.

I had removed him from my company.

I had protected my reputation.

I had moved forward.

But apparently, Elliot had never forgiven me.

And now he had found the perfect weapon.

My family.

The next morning, Thatcher made his first move.

I expected anger.

I expected threats.

I expected him to demand control.

Instead, he tried something much more dangerous.

He tried to become the victim.

By noon, the first article appeared online.

“Billionaire Heiress Vivien Carter Accused of Controlling Marriage Through Hidden Wealth.”

I stared at the headline.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was predictable.

Thatcher had spent years enjoying the benefits of my success.

Now that those benefits were gone, he needed a new story.

And the easiest story was always the same.

A powerful woman was cold.

A successful woman was controlling.

A wealthy woman was cruel.

Clara arrived at my office twenty minutes later.

She dropped a tablet on the desk.

“They’re moving fast.”

I looked at the article.

“Who published this?”

“An online magazine owned by one of Elliot’s investment groups.”

Of course.

I leaned back.

“So this was planned.”

“Yes.”

Clara looked serious.

“They are trying to make you look like the villain before you reveal the truth.”

I nodded.

“They need public sympathy.”

“Exactly.”

I looked at the screen.

The article described Thatcher as a devoted husband who had been “financially controlled” by his wife.

It described Beatrix as an innocent mother trying to protect her son.

And me?

A ruthless businesswoman who allegedly used money to dominate her family.

It was almost impressive.

Almost.

They had taken every truth and twisted it.

I had provided.

They called it control.

I had protected.

They called it manipulation.

I had built.

They called it arrogance.

I looked at Clara.

“Release the records.”

She hesitated.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Once this happens, there is no going back.”

I looked at the photograph on my desk.

At Sabina’s smiling face beside me.

“There was never going back after he hit me.”

Clara nodded.

“I’ll handle it.”

Three hours later, the internet changed.

The same people who had read the accusations now saw the evidence.

Financial documents.

Property records.

Investment history.

Proof that Vivien Carter had built the entire financial foundation of the Vale lifestyle.

The mansion?

Mine.

The cars?

Purchased through my company.

The business investments?

Mine.

The monthly allowance?

My money.

The public reaction changed instantly.

Comments flooded in.

People who had believed Thatcher’s story now questioned him.

The image of the powerful Vale heir began collapsing.

But Thatcher was not finished.

Men like him rarely accepted losing control.

That evening, he came home furious.

“You embarrassed me.”

I was sitting in the living room reading a report.

I didn’t even look up.

“Interesting.”

“What is?”

“That you are embarrassed by the truth.”

He walked closer.

“You ruined my reputation.”

“No.”

I closed the folder.

“You built your reputation on something that wasn’t real.”

His eyes burned with anger.

“You think you’re better than me?”

“No.”

I looked directly at him.

“I think I am done pretending you are better than me.”

The words hit him.

Because they were what he feared most.

Not losing money.

Not losing the house.

Losing the illusion.

The illusion that he was the powerful one.

“You’re enjoying this.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I stood.

“I’m surviving this.”

That night, Beatrix came to my room.

Not angrily.

Not shouting.

That worried me more.

Because Beatrix was most dangerous when she was calm.

She entered without knocking.

A habit she had always had.

As if every room belonged to her.

“We need to talk.”

I continued packing some of Sabina’s things.

“There is nothing to discuss.”

“You are making a mistake.”

I stopped.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Because you are acting emotionally.”

I turned.

“Emotionally?”

“Yes.”

She stepped closer.

“You are angry because Thatcher hurt you.”

I stared at her.

“He assaulted me.”

Her expression barely changed.

“But you are destroying a family.”

I felt something inside me freeze.

“You watched.”

A pause.

“What?”

“You watched him hit me.”

Her eyes shifted.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“You didn’t stop him.”

“Vivien—”

“No.”

My voice became sharper.

“You stood there.”

I stepped closer.

“And you smiled.”

Her face hardened.

“You always thought you were better than us.”

I almost smiled.

There it was.

The truth.

“You never hated me because I was arrogant.”

I looked at her.

“You hated me because I was necessary.”

Silence.

Because she knew I was right.

Without me, the Vale family was just a name.

A beautiful name.

An empty name.

“You took my son away from me.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Your son chose this.”

Her expression changed.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

I looked at her.

“You raised a man who believed money was more important than kindness.”

I paused.

“And now you are shocked because he became exactly what you taught him.”

For the first time…

Beatrix looked old.

Not powerful.

Not intimidating.

Just tired.

But I refused to feel sorry for her.

Not yet.

The next morning, the final blow came.

Not from me.

From the investors.

Thatcher’s largest business partners released a statement.

They were withdrawing.

All major contracts were suspended.

His company stock began collapsing.

His board demanded answers.

The empire he pretended to own started falling apart.

And he couldn’t stop it.

Because it was never really his.

I watched the news from my office.

Clara stood beside me.

“Are you okay?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

She looked surprised.

“You’re not happy?”

I thought about that.

“No.”

Because revenge was not what I wanted.

I wanted justice.

There was a difference.

I did not want Thatcher destroyed.

I wanted him to understand.

I wanted him to face the consequences of his choices.

The door opened.

Margaret, the housekeeper, stood there.

“Mrs. Carter?”

“Yes?”

“There is someone at the gate.”

“Who?”

She hesitated.

“A man.”

My stomach tightened.

“Name?”

She looked nervous.

“He says his name is Elliot Cross.”

The room went silent.

Clara immediately looked at me.

“He came personally?”

I stood slowly.

After all these years…

The man who betrayed me had finally come back.

I walked toward the entrance.

The doors opened.

And there he was.

Elliot.

Older.

More successful.

More confident.

The same cold eyes.

The same charming smile.

“Vivien.”

I stared at him.

“Elliot.”

He looked around the mansion.

Then smiled.

“Beautiful place.”

I said nothing.

He looked back at me.

“You built all this.”

“Yes.”

His smile widened.

“Exactly why I knew you would be worth destroying.”

My expression hardened.

“So it was you.”

He didn’t deny it.

“Thatcher was easy.”

My hands tightened.

“You used my husband.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“I used your weakness.”

“My weakness?”

“Your belief that people love you for who you are.”

The words were cruel.

But they revealed something.

Elliot didn’t know me anymore.

Because if he did…

He would know one thing.

I had spent my entire life building from nothing.

I had survived betrayal before.

I had survived losing everything.

And I was not the same woman he abandoned years ago.

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“You made one mistake, Elliot.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“What?”

“You thought I was fighting to keep my empire.”

I stepped closer.

“I’m fighting because you threatened my daughter.”

For the first time…

His smile disappeared.

And I knew.

The war had truly begun.

Because Thatcher was only the first enemy.

Elliot Cross was the real storm.

May you like

And he had no idea what he had awakened.
