Chapter 10 - The Sunlight of San Ángel

One year later, the small park in the center of San Ángel was alive with the sound of children's laughter, barking dogs, and the rustle of old jacaranda trees shedding their purple blossoms onto the grass.

Elena sat on a wooden bench, a sketchbook resting in her lap, charcoal pencil moving fluidly across the textured paper. She was drawing the scene before her—a beautiful, dynamic snapshot of life moving forward.

A few yards away, Sofía was running through the grass, her long hair streaming behind her, her cheeks bright and flush with health. She was playing tag with her friends from the local community school, her voice ringing out clear, loud, and full of an uninhibited, bell-like joy.

There were no more silent stares. No more anxious trembling. The stillness in her eyes had been replaced by a bright, curious fire.

"She looks wonderful, Elena," a voice said from the side of the bench.

Elena looked up to see Dr. Clara, who had stopped by on her afternoon walk. The psychologist watched Sofía with a proud, warm smile. "The clinical recovery is complete. She is entirely grounded in the present now. The past has become nothing more than a bad dream she can barely recall."

"Thank you, Clara," Elena said, her eyes shining with a profound gratitude. "For helping her find her voice again."

"You are the one who did that, Elena," Clara said gently, placing a hand on her arm. "A child only finds their voice when they know their mother is strong enough to hear it."

As Clara walked away, Sofía noticed her mother watching. She broke away from the game of tag, trotting over to the bench with a massive smile on her face. Her little hands were covered in dirt from the grass, and she held a small, slightly wilted purple wildflower she had picked from the edge of the path.

"For you, Mommy," Sofía said, handing her the flower before climbing up onto the bench to sit next to her, leaning her head against Elena’s shoulder.

Elena wrapped her arm around her daughter, holding her close, inhaling the sweet, clean smell of the afternoon sun, the fresh grass, and pure safety.

"Thank you, my love," Elena whispered, kissing the top of her head. "It’s beautiful."

"Mommy?" Sofía asked, looking up at the clear blue sky. "Are we going to stay in this apartment forever?"

"We can stay as long as you want, sweetheart," Elena smiled, her heart overflowing with a peace she had once thought impossible. "We can go anywhere you want. The world is very big, and it belongs to us now."

May you like

Sofía let out a happy, contented sigh, her little fingers locking through Elena’s as they watched the sun begin to set over the colonial rooftops, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and violet.

The bathroom door was open. The timer had run out. The secrets were dead. And they were finally, beautifully free.
