Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Home

As evening fell over the Cascade Mountains, the sky turned deep shades of amber, violet, and soft rose.
The party guests had all departed, leaving the estate wrapped in a peaceful, serene hush.
Inside the main house, Sarah was upstairs putting Owen and Ethan to sleep in their beautifully decorated nursery, singing the soft, familiar lullaby their mother had sung to them since the day they were born.
Nathan walked out onto the front porch—the very same porch where, seven months ago, a frozen five-year-old girl had collapsed in a blizzard with two babies in her arms.
The old wooden steps had been replaced with warm stone, and beside the front door sat a brass plaque engraved with four simple words:
WELCOME HOME, LILY.
Nathan sat down on the wide wooden bench, pulling his sweater tight against the crisp evening mountain air.
A light footstep sounded behind him.
Lily stepped out onto the porch, wearing her soft blue pajama set, clutching her favorite stuffed bear—a giant brown teddy Nathan had bought her on her first day out of the hospital.
“Uncle Nathan?” Lily asked softly, rubbing her sleepy eyes.
Nathan immediately opened his arm, offering a warm spot beside him. “Hey there, sweet pea. Why aren't you in bed?”
Lily climbed up onto the bench, tucking her legs under her blanket, resting her small head against Nathan’s side.
“I was looking at the stars,” Lily whispered, pointing her tiny finger toward the brilliant constellation of the Big Dipper shining above the dark pine trees. “Mommy said Daddy Arthur—your dad—is up there watching us.”
Nathan wrapped his strong arm around her shoulders, kissing the top of her soft blond hair. “I think she’s right, Lily. I think he’s very proud of you.”
Lily reached into her small pajama pocket and pulled out the old silver bracelet—the one that had fallen from her frozen blanket on that terrifying night in January.
The metal had been professionally cleaned and polished, its engraved words shining like brand new under the porch light: Property of Sarah Carter. 2018.
Lily slid the bracelet over her small wrist, looking up at Nathan with her big, brilliant green eyes.
“Uncle Nathan?”
“Yes, Lily?”
“Are we going to stay in the glass house forever?”
Nathan looked at his niece—the brave little girl who had broken through his frozen heart, destroyed every lie he had believed for seven years, and taught him the true meaning of family.
He smiled, pulling her tight against his chest as the mountain breeze whispered through the pines.
“Yes, Lily,” Nathan promised softly, his voice full of infinite love and peace. “We are staying right here. Forever.”

Lily smiled, closed her eyes, and drifted off to sleep in her uncle’s arms, safe, loved, and finally home.
