Chapter 5 - The Corporate Shield

The arrest of Jason Vance should have been the end of the nightmare, but in the world of high-stakes corporate power, justice is rarely that simple.
By Monday morning, I found myself sitting in the office of my legal counsel, Marcus Vance (no relation to Jason). Marcus was a veteran family law attorney who had handled my divorce two years ago. On the desk between us lay a stack of legal filings that had been delivered to my apartment at dawn.
"Jason’s father is Arthur Vance, Michael," Marcus said, rubbing his temples as he pointed to the documents. "He’s the senior managing partner at Vance & Associates, one of the most powerful corporate defense firms in the state. They’ve already posted his two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar bail. He’s out, Michael. He’s staying at a private estate in Lake Forest under electronic monitoring."
I stood up so fast my chair slammed into the drywall behind me. "He’s out? He locked a ten-year-old girl in a dog cage! He slaughtered a litter of animals to traumatize her! He has a history of domestic abuse that the neighbors called the police for twice!"
"The police reports from the neighbors were buried, Michael," Marcus explained, his voice low and clinical. "Arthur Vance has major political ties to the county sheriff's department. The responding officers filed those calls as 'unfounded neighborhood disputes.' As far as the official record is concerned, before Friday, there was zero evidence of abuse in that household. And now, their legal team is filing an emergency motion to restore Jason’s residential rights to the house, claiming your entry onto the property was an illegal search that taints all the evidence found in the backyard."
"And Sarah?" I demanded, my hands shaking with a violent, toxic rage. "Where is my ex-wife?"
"Sarah is currently checked into a private psychiatric facility in Wisconsin," Marcus said, looking at me with genuine pity. "Her lawyers have filed an affidavit stating she is suffering from a severe nervous breakdown and is incompetent to give a statement. Without her testimony, Jason’s defense is going to argue that she was the one who abused Emily due to her mental instability, and that Jason was simply trying to manage a chaotic household."
I looked out the window at the Chicago skyline. I had a decent job as a construction project manager; I made good money, but I wasn't a billionaire. I didn't have a team of silver-tongued lawyers who could rewrite the laws of physics to protect a criminal. I was just a father with a truck and a broken little girl sleeping in my spare bedroom with a chair wedged under the doorknob because she was afraid of the dark.

"What do we do, Marcus?" I whispered, looking back at him. "If they take her back... if a judge signs a temporary placement order while this case is pending... I'll kill him. I swear to God, I'll take a hunting rifle and I'll finish this myself."
"Don't talk like that, Michael," Marcus warned sharply, standing up and grabbing my shoulder. "That's exactly what they want. They want you to lose your temper. They want you to threaten him so they can get a restraining order against you. We play this by the book. We get Emily to a certified child psychologist today. We document every scar, every bruise, and every word she says. We make her the witness they can't bury."
