Chapter 3 - The Evaluation of the Fortress

The master bedroom of the Holloway estate was typically a sanctuary of neutral tones and expensive minimalist furniture, but that night, it became a field hospital. Nathan had carried Emma straight up the grand staircase, ignoring Mrs. Grayson’s rising protestations from the foyer below. He had locked the heavy oak door of the master suite, turned on the deep soaking tub to its maximum heat, and immediately called Dr. Alana Sterling, the family’s private pediatrician and one of the few people Nathan trusted implicitly.

Within twenty minutes, Dr. Sterling had arrived, her professional demeanor cutting through the tension of the house like a scalpel. She sat on the edge of the bed, wrapped in a plush robe Nathan had provided, while Emma sat quietly, drinking a cup of warm milk with honey.

Nathan stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his hands clasped behind his back, staring down at the driveway where the rain continued to fall. His jaw was clenched so tightly that a muscle in his cheek twitched rhythmically.

"Nathan," Dr. Sterling said, stepping away from the bed and joining him by the glass, her voice lowered so Emma wouldn't hear. "Physically, she is stable, but there are clear signs of systemic neglect. Her weight has dropped by nearly eight pounds since her last check-up two months ago. That’s nearly ten percent of her body mass. She has mild skin irritation on her wrists and ankles consistent with coarse, damp fabric... like someone who has been restricted to an unheated space."

Nathan’s fists tightened in his pockets until his knuckles turned white. "And psychologically?"

"Hyper-vigilance," Alana said, her expression grim. "She watches the door constantly. When I asked her to take off the dress so I could examine her, she asked me if 'the supervisor' had given permission. Nathan, this isn't just an overbearing nanny. This is a calculated, psychological degradation. Mrs. Grayson has systematically dismantled Emma’s sense of self and security in her own home."

A soft, polite knock sounded at the bedroom door.

Nathan didn't hesitate. He walked across the room, unlocked the door, and swung it open. Standing there was not Mrs. Grayson, but Marcus Vance, the head of the private security firm Nathan paid a quarter of a million dollars a year to monitor the property. Marcus looked pale, holding a digital tablet in his hand.

"Mr. Holloway," Marcus said, his voice tense. "I came as soon as Dr. Sterling’s vehicle bypassed the main gate. I... I think you need to look at this."

Nathan stepped out into the hallway, closing the door behind him to shield Emma from the conversation. "Marcus, your men are stationed at the gate twenty-four hours a day. You have twelve cameras covering the exterior of this property. How did my daughter end up barefoot in a rainstorm dragging fifty pounds of waste while a tyrant watched her?"

Marcus lowered his head, a look of profound shame crossing his weathered features. "Sir, look at the security log on the server. According to the digital ledger, the cameras have been on a continuous loop for the last forty-five days. Every time my team monitored the feed from the main house, we saw a pre-recorded video of Emma playing in the garden with Mrs. Grayson, or studying in the library. The system was bypassed from the inside."

Nathan took the tablet from Marcus’s hand. He scrolled through the code, his analytical mind quickly identifying the digital signature. It was an advanced encryption override, the kind used by corporate espionage firms to mask industrial thefts. This wasn't the work of an elderly nanny who wanted to teach a child manners.

"Evelyn Grayson didn't hack this system herself, Marcus," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a register that made the seasoned security professional step back. "She doesn't know python script from a grocery list. Someone gave her this access. Someone wanted me blind while they were in my house."

"Where is she now?" Nathan asked.

"She’s in the downstairs drawing room, sir," Marcus replied. "She called her personal attorney ten minutes ago. She’s claiming you threatened her and that she feels unsafe in the residence."

Nathan handed the tablet back to Marcus. "Tell your men to lock down the outer gates. No one enters this property, and no one leaves. Especially not Mrs. Grayson."
