Chapter 10 - The Horizon of the Harbor

One year later, the winter fog returned to San Diego, but it carried no fear.
It was 3:15 in the morning, the exact hour of the rescue that had rewritten the ledger of her life. Elena stood on the grand private terrace of the Cross Estate in La Jolla, a warm mug of cocoa clutched in her hands, watching the black sheen of the Pacific Ocean move beneath the moonlit cliffs.
The double doors behind her opened silently, and Dominic stepped out into the cool night air, wrapping a heavy cashmere blanket around her shoulders and drawing her back against his broad, solid chest. His arms locked securely around her waist, his chin resting against her hair.
"You're thinking about the pier," Dominic whispered, his breath warm against her ear.
"Always at this hour," Elena said, turning slightly in his embrace to look at his face. "I keep wondering what would have happened if I had just kept walking. If I had stayed invisible."
Dominic leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a deep, lingering kiss that tasted of chocolate and the salty sea air—a kiss that carried the weight of a hundred broken promises he had finally fulfilled to keep her safe.

"You were never invisible to the water, Elena," Dominic said, his grey eyes shining with an eternal, unbreakable devotion as he looked down at his wife. "And you will never be invisible to me. The harbor took something from my family twenty years ago when my father died... but it gave me you. And that is a ledger I will gladly spend the rest of my life balancing."
Down below the cliffs, the waves crashed peacefully against the rocks, a steady, rhythmic heartbeat that echoed the quiet security of the fortress above. The lights of the shipping containers blinked in the distance, heading out toward destinations all over the world, but here, on the solid stone of the coast, the baker and the king were finally, beautifully, home.
