CHAPTER 5 – THE WAR FOR AMELIE HART

For eleven months, Vivian Hart believed she had lost everything.
She believed the accident took her husband.
She believed grief took her daughter.
She believed the weight of running Hartwell Group had forced her to become someone colder than she wanted to be.
But she was wrong.
The accident had not taken everything.
It had only revealed everything.
Because the greatest threat to her family had never been death.
It had been betrayal.
And now Vivian finally knew the truth.
Someone wanted Amelie.
Not her company.
Not her money.
Not her reputation.
Her daughter.
The realization changed something inside Vivian.
The woman who once fought to protect an empire was gone.
Now there was only a mother.
And a mother did not negotiate when her child was in danger.
At 6:00 a.m., every senior executive at Hartwell Group received an emergency message.
Mandatory meeting. Private boardroom. No exceptions.
By 7:00 a.m., everyone was seated.
Everyone except one person.
Grant Mercer.
Vivian stood at the front of the room.
The blue box sat on the table.
The flash drive beside it.
Nobody knew what was inside.
But they knew something had changed.
Because Vivian Hart looked different.
Not angry.
Not emotional.
Focused.
“Before we begin,” she said, “I want everyone to understand something.”
The room became silent.
“This company was built by my father.”
She looked around.
“My husband protected it.”
A pause.
“And I will not allow anyone to use it as a weapon against my daughter.”
Some executives exchanged nervous looks.
Vivian placed several documents on the screen.
“Over the last six years, someone inside Hartwell Group has been transferring confidential information to Vale International.”
Shock filled the room.
Whispers began.
She continued.
“The purpose was not simply financial damage.”
The screen changed.
A photograph of Amelie appeared.
Everyone became still.
“The purpose was access.”
Nobody spoke.
“Access to my family.”
The room went silent.
Then one voice broke through.
“Vivian.”
She turned.
Grant Mercer stood near the door.
Everyone looked at him.
He looked exhausted.
“I need to tell you something.”
Vivian stared.
“Where were you?”
Grant swallowed.
“I was trying to find the person who took Daniel’s evidence.”
“And did you?”
His silence answered.
Vivian’s eyes narrowed.
“Grant.”
“I know who it is.”
The room froze.
“Who?”
Grant looked around.
Then said:
“Your mother.”
The words felt impossible.
Even though Vivian already suspected it.
Even though the evidence was there.
Hearing it aloud made it real.
“No.”
Grant looked at her.
“Vivian—”
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“My mother did many things.”
She stared at him.
“But she would never hurt Amelie.”
Grant’s expression changed.
“Are you sure?”
The question cut deeper than any accusation.
Because suddenly Vivian remembered.
Every time Eleanor visited.
Every time she asked questions about Amelie.
Every time she criticized Vivian’s parenting.
Every time she said:
“You are too emotional when it comes to your daughter.”
At the time, Vivian thought it was cruelty.
Now…
She wondered if it was observation.
That afternoon, Eleanor Hart arrived at the penthouse without invitation.
Vivian was waiting.
No security.
No lawyers.
No employees.
Just mother and daughter.
Two women who had spent years understanding power but forgetting love.
Eleanor looked around.
“Daniel’s box.”
Vivian froze.
“You know about it.”
Eleanor sighed.
“I was afraid you would find it.”
“Why?”
“Because then I knew I couldn’t protect you anymore.”
Vivian laughed bitterly.
“Protect me?”
“You think I wanted this?”
“You helped them.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
The admission was worse than denial.
Vivian stepped back.
“Why?”
“Because I had no choice.”
“Everyone says that when they betray someone.”
Eleanor looked at her daughter.
“When you were eight years old, I learned something.”
“What?”
“That powerful people don’t destroy you directly.”
She paused.
“They destroy what you love.”
Vivian frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
“Your father.”
The room became still.
“My father?”
Eleanor nodded.
“Charles Hart built this company. But he made enemies.”
“Who?”
“Richard Vale.”
Vivian froze.
“Vale knew your father had information that could destroy him.”
Eleanor continued.
“When your father refused to cooperate, Vale threatened our family.”
Vivian shook her head.
“No.”
“He threatened you.”
A cold feeling moved through Vivian.
“He said if I didn’t help him access Hartwell Group…”
Eleanor’s voice broke.
“He would come after my children.”
Vivian stared.
“You had another choice.”
Eleanor looked away.
“Did I?”
The question hung in the room.
And for the first time, Vivian saw something she had never allowed herself to see.
Her mother was not powerful.
She was terrified.
Before Vivian could respond, every phone in the room rang.
Ethan.
She answered immediately.
“Ethan?”
His voice was urgent.
“Vivian, take Amelie and leave.”
Her heart stopped.
“Why?”
“They found the penthouse security system.”
“What?”
“They know about the blue box.”
Vivian looked toward the hallway.
Too late.
A sound.
The elevator.
Someone coming up.
She moved instantly.
“Where is Amelie?”
“Bedroom.”
Ethan’s voice became sharper.
“Vivian, listen to me.”
“What?”
“Do not let them take her.”
The line disconnected.
The penthouse lights went dark.
Again.
Just like Eleanor’s house.
A pattern.
A message.
Someone wanted Vivian afraid.
But they had made one mistake.
They forgot who Vivian Hart was.
She moved through the darkness quietly.
Not like a CEO.
Like a mother.
She reached Amelie’s room.
The door was open.
Empty.
Her heart nearly stopped.
Then—
“Mommy?”
A small voice.
Behind her.
Vivian turned.
Amelie stood holding her rabbit.
And beside her…
Ethan.
Relief hit her so hard she almost collapsed.
Then she saw the blood on his shirt.
“Ethan.”
“I’m okay.”
“You’re bleeding.”
“Not important.”
It was then Vivian understood.
Ethan had put himself between danger and her daughter.
The way Daniel had.
The way family did.
Security arrived minutes later.
But the attackers were gone.
Only one thing remained.
A message written on the wall.
YOU CANNOT PROTECT HER FOREVER.
Vivian stared at it.
Then something inside her broke.
Not fear.
Anger.
Pure, unstoppable anger.
She picked up her phone.
Called Richard Vale.
He answered immediately.
“Vivian.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I know everything.”
A pause.
“I doubt that.”
“You wanted my daughter.”
Silence.
Then:
“She is the key.”
Vivian’s blood turned cold.
“To what?”
“The truth your husband hid.”
“You killed him.”
“No.”
A pause.
“But Daniel made the mistake of thinking love could defeat power.”
Vivian gripped the phone.
“You don’t know anything about love.”
Richard laughed softly.
“Actually, Vivian…”
His voice lowered.
“I know more about your family than you do.”
The call ended.
That night, Vivian sat beside Amelie’s bed.
For the first time in months, she didn’t work.
She didn’t check emails.
She didn’t review contracts.
She just watched her daughter sleep.
Ethan stood at the doorway.
“You should rest.”
Vivian shook her head.
“I wasted so much time.”
Ethan stayed quiet.
“I thought giving her everything was enough.”
“You were grieving.”
“I was hiding.”
She looked at him.
“I became the kind of person Daniel was afraid I would become.”
Ethan walked closer.
“No.”
Vivian looked up.
“He didn’t fear who you were.”
“Then what did he fear?”
“That you would forget who you were.”
The words stayed with her.
Because maybe that was the real battle.
Not against Richard Vale.
Not against Eleanor.
Not against enemies in the shadows.
The real battle was finding the woman she had lost.
The mother.
The wife.
The person beneath the armor.
The next morning, Vivian received one final message.
Unknown number.
One video.
She opened it.
Richard Vale appeared on screen.
Behind him was a room Vivian recognized.
Daniel’s old office.
“How?”
Richard smiled.
“You should ask your mother.”
Vivian froze.
Then the camera moved.
Showing someone sitting in the chair.
Someone Vivian thought was safe.
Someone who had disappeared after the attack.
Someone who knew every secret.
Ethan Cole.
But he wasn’t injured.
He wasn’t captured.
He was sitting calmly.
Beside Richard.
Vivian stopped breathing.
No.
Impossible.
Richard looked into the camera.
“The hardest betrayal is not when an enemy hurts you.”
He smiled.
“It’s when the person you trusted was never on your side.”
The video ended.
Vivian stared at the screen.
Her world collapsed.
Because if Ethan had betrayed her…
Then Daniel’s final promise had been a lie.
And the one person protecting her daughter…
May have been the person leading the danger toward her.
But Vivian Hart had survived betrayal before.
And now she had something she never had before.
A reason stronger than revenge.
Her daughter.
Her family.
Her truth.
The war for Amelie Hart had begun.
May you like
And Vivian was ready to destroy anyone who stood in her way.
