CHAPTER 3 – THE SECRET IN THE BABY'S BLOOD

The call came just after sunrise.
Grace was standing beside the nursery window, watching fresh snow settle over the Cooper estate, when someone knocked softly.
"Mrs. Miller?"
It was Dr. Samuel Brooks.
The Cooper family's physician had returned earlier than expected.
He wasn't smiling.
Grace's stomach tightened immediately.
"Is Noah worse?"
The doctor hesitated.
"No."
"But something happened."
"What is it?"
"I'd like Mr. Cooper to be present before I explain."
Ten minutes later, Liam entered the private medical room that occupied one wing of the mansion.
The room had once belonged to his late wife during her pregnancy with Ethan.
He hadn't stepped inside for years.
Seeing Noah lying peacefully in the examination crib brought back memories he had spent five years trying to bury.
Dr. Brooks closed the door.
"I ran additional blood work last night."
Liam frowned.
"I thought the problem was exposure."
"It was."
"So why more tests?"
The doctor inhaled slowly.
"Because something about Noah's heartbeat bothered me."
Grace looked from one man to the other.
"I don't understand."
Dr. Brooks turned the monitor toward them.
"There are signs of a rare hereditary blood disorder."
Grace's face went pale.
"Hereditary?"
"Yes."
"I've never heard of it."
"You probably wouldn't have."
The doctor pointed to several highlighted results.
"It's extremely uncommon."
Liam folded his arms.
"Can it be treated?"
"Yes."
"But there's another issue."
The room grew very still.
"This condition almost always appears within specific family bloodlines."
Grace stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
"It means..."
He looked directly at Liam.
"...I've only seen this genetic marker once before."
Liam's expression hardened.
"When?"
The doctor answered quietly.
"Six years ago."
The silence became unbearable.
Grace couldn't breathe.
Liam's eyes narrowed.
"Whose test?"
Dr. Brooks looked almost reluctant.
"Ethan's."
No one moved.
No one spoke.
The only sound in the room was Noah's soft breathing.
Grace shook her head.
"No..."
She laughed nervously.
"That's impossible."
"It may be coincidence."
"But medically..."
The doctor didn't finish.
He didn't need to.
Liam stared at the laboratory report as though it had suddenly been written in another language.
"My son carries this mutation?"
"Yes."
"And this baby carries the same one?"
"Yes."
"The odds?"
"Extraordinarily small."
Grace's voice trembled.
"You're saying they're related?"
"I'm saying..."
The doctor chose every word carefully.
"...they may share an ancestor."
Downstairs...
Victoria Cooper was making her own phone call.
"I want everything."
The private investigator remained silent.
"Every address."
"Every employer."
"Every hospital."
"Every police report."
"I don't care how small."
She walked toward the library windows.
"The woman didn't appear by accident."
She glanced toward the nursery.
"And if she did..."
Her smile disappeared.
"...I'll prove it."
Grace sat beside Noah's crib after the examination ended.
Her hands wouldn't stop shaking.
She had spent months trying not to think about Noah's father.
There wasn't much to remember.
A charity fundraiser.
One evening.
A man who introduced himself only as Daniel.
Kind.
Gentle.
Funny.
He had disappeared before Noah was born.
His phone disconnected.
His apartment empty.
No forwarding address.
She had eventually accepted that he had abandoned them.
But now...
Questions she thought were buried had begun digging themselves back into her life.
Liam found her nearly an hour later.
She didn't notice him immediately.
She was humming quietly to Noah.
The same lullaby her own mother had once sung.
"I didn't know you could sing."
Grace looked up.
"I don't."
"You do."
She smiled faintly.
"Only for him."
Liam stepped closer.
"The doctor's results..."
"I know."
"You're frightened."
"I am."
"So am I."
That surprised her.
"You?"
He nodded.
"I've spent years believing my life was finally predictable."
He looked toward Noah.
"Now nothing feels predictable anymore."
Across town...
Inside a sleek office overlooking downtown skyscrapers...
A man opened an encrypted email.
SUBJECT: Preliminary Investigation – Grace Miller
He read silently.
His face slowly lost all color.
The report included photographs.
Employment history.
Medical records.
Financial records.
Everything.
Then one line caught his attention.
Possible father listed: Unknown.
The man whispered one name.
"Grace..."
His assistant looked up.
"Sir?"
He closed the file immediately.
"Cancel every meeting."
"But your flight—"
"Cancel it."
"Everything?"
"Everything."
The assistant had never seen him like this.
"What happened?"
The man looked toward the snow outside.
"I think..."
His voice nearly broke.
"...I may have a son."
Back at the Cooper mansion...
Christmas dinner had barely ended when another surprise arrived.
The front gates opened.
A black luxury sedan rolled slowly toward the entrance.
Harrington frowned.
"We aren't expecting anyone."
Neither was Liam.
A uniformed security guard hurried inside.
"Sir..."
"What is it?"
"There's a woman here."
"Who?"
The guard swallowed.
"She says she's your late wife's sister."
Liam froze.
"Rebecca?"
"Yes."
"And..."
The guard hesitated.
"...she says she knows exactly who Grace Miller is."
Grace's heart stopped.
She had never heard that name before.
May you like
But something told her...
Her past had just arrived at the front door.
