CHAPTER 4 – THE WOMAN WHO WANTED THE COLE FORTUNE

The next morning, the Cole mansion was no longer peaceful.

It was a battlefield.

Not the kind with shouting or broken furniture.

The dangerous kind.

The kind where everyone smiled.

The kind where every word had a hidden meaning.

Because secrets had entered the house.

And secrets changed everything.

For years, I had believed my family’s greatest asset was money.

I was wrong.

It was information.

The people who knew the most had the most power.

And someone had spent years collecting information about Maria, Lily, and my family.

Now they were using it.

I found Maria in the kitchen at six in the morning.

She was making breakfast for Lily.

Not because she had to.

Because that was who she was.

Even after everything.

Even after someone threatened her.

Even after her entire life was being turned upside down.

She still worried about whether her daughter ate enough fruit.

That told me more about Maria Alvarez than any background report ever could.

“You should be resting.”

She turned.

“Good morning, Ethan.”

I noticed something.

She still called me Mr. Cole when she was scared.

She only called me Ethan when she forgot to be afraid.

“Did you sleep?”

She smiled faintly.

“A little.”

“That means no.”

She looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

I immediately shook my head.

“There it is again.”

“What?”

“You apologizing.”

Her expression softened.

“I don’t know how to stop.”

“Then learn.”

She looked surprised.

I walked closer.

“You don’t have to apologize for being scared.”

A pause.

“You don’t have to apologize for needing help.”

Another pause.

“And you definitely don’t have to apologize for protecting your daughter.”

Her eyes became emotional.

For a second, she looked away.

Like she didn’t want me to see.

But I did.

I saw the woman beneath the uniform.

Not a maid.

Not an employee.

A mother.

A survivor.

Someone who had carried an impossible burden alone.

Before I could say more, Lily came running into the kitchen.

“Efan!”

She jumped into my arms.

I caught her easily.

“Good morning.”

She touched my face.

“You look tired.”

I laughed.

“Do I?”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“Your eyes look like Daddy’s old shoes.”

I looked at Maria.

She covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.

“Your daughter is very honest.”

“She gets that from you.”

The words left my mouth before I thought about them.

Maria froze.

I froze too.

Because it was the first time I had spoken to her like we were something more than employer and employee.

Something changed in the silence.

Then Lily smiled.

“Mommy makes good cookies.”

She held up three fingers.

“Three cookies.”

I looked at Maria.

“Three?”

She looked embarrassed.

“She negotiated.”

I smiled.

“Smart girl.”

Lily nodded proudly.

“Like Mommy.”

And somehow…

that simple sentence meant more than any compliment I had received in my life.

At nine that morning, my mother arrived.

Again.

This time, she did not come alone.

Victoria came with her.

I knew immediately this was planned.

My mother never visited unexpectedly.

Victoria never appeared without a reason.

Together, they walked into my office like they owned it.

Maybe they thought they did.

“Ethan.”

My mother’s voice was cold.

“Mother.”

Victoria smiled.

“Can we talk?”

I leaned back.

“We’re already talking.”

My mother ignored the sarcasm.

“This situation has gone too far.”

“What situation?”

She looked toward the hallway.

“Her.”

I knew exactly who she meant.

My expression changed.

“Maria has a name.”

Victoria sighed.

“Ethan.”

“No.”

My voice became sharper.

“You don’t get to walk into my home and talk about her like she’s an object.”

My mother looked surprised.

Because I had never challenged her like that before.

“This is exactly what I’m talking about.”

“What?”

“You’re emotionally compromised.”

I almost laughed.

“Because I care about a child?”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“Because you care about the wrong people.”

The sentence hung in the air.

The wrong people.

I looked at Victoria.

Then my mother.

And suddenly I understood something.

They weren’t worried about Maria.

They were worried about losing control.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Ethan, nobody is saying Lily doesn’t deserve kindness.”

“But?”

“But you have to be realistic.”

I waited.

She continued.

“Maria knew exactly what she was doing.”

My jaw tightened.

“What?”

“She hid her identity.”

“She was afraid.”

“Or she was strategic.”

I stared at her.

“You think she planned this?”

“I think people do desperate things when money is involved.”

The irony almost made me laugh.

Because Maria was the least money-driven person I had ever met.

She was the woman who apologized for accepting help.

The woman who repaired Lily’s old shoes instead of buying new ones.

The woman who had no idea how much my house was worth.

“She never asked me for anything.”

Victoria smiled.

“Not yet.”

That was when I knew.

This wasn’t about concern.

It was an attack.

After they left, I called James.

“I need everything on Victoria Ashford.”

There was silence.

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

“Her family too?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Mr. Cole…”

“What?”

“I should warn you.”

“About?”

“The Ashfords are powerful.”

I looked out the window.

“So am I.”

“That’s not what I mean.”

James lowered his voice.

“They don’t fight clean.”

Neither did whoever threatened Maria.

“Find the truth.”

Three hours later, James sent the file.

I opened it.

Victoria Ashford.

Perfect education.

Perfect family.

Perfect reputation.

But perfection had cracks.

Small ones.

Hidden ones.

Charity donations that disappeared.

Business partnerships that ended suddenly.

Employees who left without explanation.

Then I reached a section that made me stop.

Connection to Robert Cole Estate Investigation.

My father.

Again.

I kept reading.

Ten years earlier, Victoria’s father had been involved in a financial dispute with my father.

A dispute that had never become public.

Because my father paid to make it disappear.

I closed my eyes.

How many secrets had my father buried?

How many people were connected to the past I never knew?

That evening, Maria finally told me everything.

Not because I demanded it.

Because she was tired of hiding.

We sat beneath the old oak tree.

The same tree where Lily first found me.

“She was born three years ago.”

Maria looked toward the mansion.

“Your father helped me.”

“How?”

“He paid for the hospital.”

I listened.

“He arranged a place for us to stay.”

“Why?”

“Because Michael asked him to.”

My chest tightened.

“My brother?”

Maria nodded.

“Michael loved Lily.”

A painful silence.

“What happened to him?”

Her eyes filled.

“He died before she was born.”

I looked down.

“How?”

Maria hesitated.

“He was investigating something.”

“What?”

“Your family.”

That answer hurt.

“He found out your father had been betrayed.”

“By who?”

She looked at me.

“By the people closest to him.”

I felt a chill.

“Victoria’s family?”

Maria didn’t answer.

But she didn’t need to.

Michael Cole had discovered that the Cole fortune was not as clean as everyone believed.

Years earlier, Robert Cole had entered a partnership with the Ashford family.

Together, they created a private investment network.

But someone had been stealing from it.

Someone inside.

Michael discovered the truth.

And before he could expose it…

he disappeared.

“Why didn’t my father tell me?”

Maria looked at the ground.

“Because he was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

“From becoming like him.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Your father regretted many things.”

She looked at me.

“He spent his life building an empire.”

A pause.

“But he lost his family doing it.”

The words stayed with me.

Because I knew exactly what that felt like.

Later that night, I checked the security cameras.

Something caught my attention.

A person entering the east wing.

At midnight.

I froze.

Because the person had access.

The person had a keycard.

The person belonged inside the mansion.

I watched the footage again.

And my blood went cold.

It was my mother.

She entered the staff area.

She opened Maria’s door.

And she placed something inside.

I immediately went downstairs.

When I reached the room…

my mother was already gone.

Maria stood there holding a small envelope.

Her face was pale.

“What is it?”

She handed it to me.

Inside was a legal document.

A custody agreement.

And at the bottom…

a signature.

Eleanor Cole.

My mother.

The document claimed Maria was an unfit mother.

It claimed Lily was living in an unsafe environment.

And it requested immediate removal of the child.

I looked at Maria.

She was crying silently.

“They’re going to take her.”

The words broke something inside me.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Ethan, you don’t understand.”

“Yes, I do.”

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“People like me don’t win against people like them.”

I looked at her.

For the first time, I saw what she truly believed.

That powerful people always won.

That poor people always lost.

That love was not enough.

I took the document.

Then I looked toward Lily’s room.

A little girl sleeping peacefully.

A little girl who trusted me.

And I made a promise.

Not to Maria.

Not to anyone else.

To myself.

“No one is taking her.”

Maria looked at me.

“Ethan…”

I held the document tighter.

“They want a war?”

A cold smile appeared.

“Then they picked the wrong family to fight.”

The next morning, the world woke up to a shocking headline.

“COLE HEIR FACES FAMILY BATTLE OVER MYSTERY CHILD.”

Someone had leaked the custody papers.

Someone wanted the public against me.

But they made one mistake.

They underestimated what I was willing to lose.

Because before Lily…

I had an empire.

After Lily…

I had something worth protecting.

And then came the message that changed everything.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

“Ask your mother what happened the night Michael Cole died.”

Attached was a photograph.

My mother.

Victoria’s father.

And Michael.

Standing together.

The night before my brother disappeared.

I stared at the image.

Because suddenly, I realized the truth.

Maria was not the biggest secret in my house.

My family was.

And whoever wanted Lily gone…

May you like

was willing to destroy the entire Cole fortune to make sure the past stayed buried.

TO BE CONTINUED…
