Chapter 6 - The Battle of Evidence

For the next four hours, the NICU was transformed into a fortress under siege. Outside the glass doors, police officers stood guard while legal teams traded furious motions over emergency fax lines and digital court portals. Inside, a quiet, desperate battle was being fought for the life and future of Baby Hope.
In Bed Seven’s bay, Nurse Sarah and I worked tirelessly to stabilize Chloe. As the IV fluids and antibiotics began to flush the toxins from her system, her mind cleared, revealing a woman of extraordinary strength who had been systematically pushed to the brink by an all-powerful family.
"They took my medical records, Arthur," Chloe whispered, sitting up in her bed while holding a cup of warm broth with shaking hands. "When David died, I was devastated. I made a mistake—I turned to pain medication to cope with the grief. But the moment I found out I was pregnant with Hope, I checked myself into a rehabilitation facility. I was clean for six months."
Arthur sat beside her bed, his large hands still holding little Hope, who was sleeping peacefully. "What happened at the third trimester?"
"Charles Sterling’s agents found out about the pregnancy," Chloe explained, her eyes filling with tears. "They offered me five million dollars to sign away my rights and leave the country. When I refused, they had a corrupt physician prescribe me heavy sedatives under the pretense of high-risk pregnancy management. They were deliberately spiking my medical tests to frame me as an uncontained drug addict so they could claim legal incompetence!"
I stepped forward, holding a copy of the toxicology report from the day Hope was born. "Arthur, look at this. The toxic screen shows high levels of synthetic benzodiazepines—prescribed drugs—not illicit street substances. The initial hospital intake report was filled out by a doctor affiliated with the Sterling Foundation's private medical network."
"It's a setup," Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "They deliberately induced neonatal withdrawal to isolate the baby, push Chloe out of the picture, and declare her legally unfit."
"We can prove it," Chloe said suddenly, reaching into the lining of her rain-soaked jacket. She pulled out a small, encrypted USB flash drive suspended on a thin wire. "David gave me this before his last deployment. It contains the complete financial ledgers of the Sterling Corporation—including illegal offshore accounts and proof of bribery involving local judges and medical examiners. David told me to use it only if his family ever tried to destroy us."
Arthur took the USB drive into his massive, trembling palm. He looked at the tiny device that held the key to bringing down a corporate empire.
"We need a lawyer who isn't bought by the Sterling estate," Arthur said, looking up at me.
"I know someone," I replied immediately. "My sister, Evelyn Vance-Cruz. She’s a federal prosecutor with the Department of Justice’s Child Protection and Anti-Corruption Division. If I send her these files, this ceases to be a county custody dispute—it becomes a federal criminal investigation."
Within twenty minutes, the files were transmitted through a secure, encrypted medical portal directly to the federal prosecutor's desk in Washington, D.C.
Outside the glass doors, Charles Sterling Senior was pacing back and forth, completely unaware that the tide of battle was turning against him. He was still barking orders at his attorney, demanding that the police breach the doors.
Suddenly, Richard Sterling’s smartphone buzzed violently. The lawyer pulled it out, answered it, and within five seconds, his face turned completely white. All color drained from his lips as he listened to the voice on the other end.

He tapped Charles Sterling Senior on the shoulder, his hand trembling so violently that he nearly dropped the device.
"Sir..." Richard Sterling stammered, his voice barely a whisper. "You need to look at your phone. Right now."
