Chapter 4 – The House That Became Evidence

The ambulance arrived seven minutes later.
Too long.
Always too long.
Paramedics took one look and moved faster than conversation allowed.
“Pregnant trauma case—possible placental abruption.”
Vivian finally spoke again.
“She slipped.”
Ethan turned his head slowly toward her.
“What did you say?”
“I said she slipped.”
He laughed once.
It had no humor in it.
“You poured boiling milk on her abdomen.”
Kelsey started crying again. “It wasn’t supposed to be—”
“Get out,” Ethan said.
Everyone froze.
Even the paramedics.
Ethan didn’t raise his voice.
He didn’t need to.
“This is a crime scene,” he continued calmly. “If you are not emergency personnel, you leave my house right now.”
Vivian stepped forward. “You don’t get to—”
Ethan turned fully toward her.
And something in his expression made her stop.
“I do,” he said.
Because for the first time, he wasn’t speaking as a son-in-law.
He was speaking as a trauma surgeon who had just seen intentional injury to a pregnant patient.
And as a father who could hear his daughter’s heartbeat changing on the monitor strapped to Maddie’s abdomen.
Vivian stared at him.
Then at Maddie.
Then at the velvet box still clenched in Maddie’s hand.
And something in her face finally shifted.
Not guilt.
Not remorse.
Recognition of risk.
“What are you going to do?” she asked carefully.
Ethan answered without hesitation.
“Save my wife and child.”
May you like
Then he stepped away from her.
Forever.
