Chapter 4 – The First Laugh in Seventy-Eight Weeks

It happened without warning.

No dramatic moment.

No emotional speech.

Just Nora asking Rebecca if she liked swings.

And Rebecca saying, “Only if I’m allowed to be terrible at them.”

Noah immediately responded, “Performance is not required.”

So they went.

Grant stayed on the bench.

Watching.

Not intervening.

Not controlling.

Just watching.

For the first time in years, he didn’t feel needed.

He felt… unnecessary.

And instead of panic—

there was relief.

Nora pushed higher and higher on the swing, hair flying, shouting, “Look! I’m flying!”

Noah declared, “This is inefficient but acceptable.”

Rebecca pushed Nora once, twice, then laughed again.

Grant heard it.

And then—

Nora laughed too.

Full.

Unfiltered.

Not careful.

Not polite.

Just laughter.

Grant stood up without realizing.

His hand went to his mouth.

Seventy-eight Saturdays of silence cracked open in a single sound.

And something inside him finally broke in the right direction.
