Chapter 1: The Rain and the Reckoning

He pulled away from Celeste’s touch as if burned. The vitamins on the vanity mocked him. Prenatal. Date stamped for yesterday.

Nathan Hargrove stormed out of the bedroom, ignoring Celeste’s pleas. “Nathan, she lied to you!”

Downstairs, the foyer still smelled of rain and betrayal. Mr. Whitmore stood pale by the door. “Sir, Mrs. Hargrove took nothing but her mother’s key.”

Nathan grabbed his coat. The storm had eased to a drizzle, but Chicago’s streets at 3 AM were unforgiving. He drove himself, tires slicing through puddles, searching for Evelyn. Hospitals. Her old apartment building. Shelters. Nothing.

By dawn, guilt clawed at him. He called Andrew Keller. The attorney’s voice was ice. “She came to me about fraud in Cedar Harbor, Nathan. I helped because she’s innocent. The photos were doctored. Celeste’s work—I have proof incoming.”

Nathan’s world tilted. He confronted Celeste at breakfast. She crumbled under scrutiny, admitting partial involvement but blaming “protecting him.” Nathan fired her from his life, but the damage was done. Evelyn was gone.

Meanwhile, Evelyn reached her mother’s modest apartment. Soaked, shivering, she collapsed on the couch. “We’re safe,” she whispered to her belly. No money, no job immediately, but fierce determination. She found work at a community clinic as a receptionist while hiding her pregnancy. Friends from her pre-marriage life rallied quietly.

Nathan’s investigators confirmed the manipulation: doctored emails, hired photographer. Three days later, he learned of the pregnancy confirmation. Rage at himself consumed him. He tore apart the mansion searching for clues to her whereabouts, but Evelyn had vanished smartly.
