Chapter 5 – “The Choice Between Power and Love”

The Lombardi estate had never been this quiet.

For twenty years, silence had been Sebastian Lombardi’s companion.

But this silence was different.

Before, silence meant loneliness.

Now it meant danger.

Every hallway carried whispers.

Every guard looked over his shoulder.

Every phone call was treated as a possible threat.

Because everyone inside the mansion knew the truth.

Someone had betrayed the Lombardi family.

And that someone had been waiting patiently for twenty years.

Sebastian stood in front of the mirror in his bedroom.

Not sitting.

Standing.

With both hands gripping the wooden frame beside him.

His legs shook.

His muscles burned.

Sweat rolled down his face.

But he refused to fall.

"Enough."

Clare's voice came from behind him.

He didn't turn.

"I can continue."

"No."

"I'm improving."

"You're exhausted."

"I need to be stronger."

She walked closer.

"Sebastian."

The way she said his name stopped him.

Not "Mr. Lombardi."

Not "boss."

Just Sebastian.

The man.

Not the legend.

He slowly sat down.

"You think I'm wasting my time."

"No."

"Then what?"

"I think you're trying to outrun twenty years of pain in twenty minutes."

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

He looked away.

"I don't have time."

Clare studied him.

"Because of Marco?"

"Because of everyone."

He looked toward the window.

"My enemies waited until I became vulnerable."

"You are not vulnerable."

"I can't walk."

"You are learning."

"I can't protect people."

"You protected me."

His eyes moved toward her.

"You protected Oliver."

A pause.

"You don't see yourself the way other people see you."

Sebastian frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you think power comes from never needing anyone."

She looked at him.

"But sometimes power comes from trusting someone."

For years, Sebastian had built walls.

Clare had been slowly removing them.

And the terrifying thing was...

He was allowing her.

The attack came two days later.

Not with guns.

Not with explosions.

Something much more dangerous.

Information.

At noon, every major news outlet in Chicago received the same anonymous package.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Financial records.

Names.

The Lombardi organization had always existed in the shadows.

But now...

Someone was dragging it into the light.

Gabriel rushed into Sebastian's office.

"We have a problem."

Sebastian looked up.

"How bad?"

"The worst possible."

He placed a tablet on the desk.

The headlines filled the screen.

LOMBARDI EMPIRE LINKED TO YEARS OF ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES

MYSTERY LEAK THREATENS CHICAGO BUSINESS POWERHOUSE

SEBASTIAN LOMBARDI'S SECRET ORGANIZATION EXPOSED

Sebastian read silently.

His face remained calm.

But Gabriel knew him.

He saw the anger.

"The board members are panicking."

"They should."

"Several partners are withdrawing."

"Expected."

"Federal investigators are looking into everything."

Sebastian nodded.

Then:

"Who benefits?"

Gabriel didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Both men knew.

Marco.

That afternoon, Sebastian gathered his advisors.

The room was filled with men who had spent decades following him.

But now...

They looked uncertain.

A younger associate spoke first.

"Boss, maybe it's time to negotiate."

The room went silent.

Sebastian looked at him.

"Explain."

"We can distance ourselves. Cut losses. Let some people take responsibility."

Sebastian understood immediately.

Fear.

The man wasn't betraying him.

He was trying to survive.

But survival without loyalty was something Sebastian had never respected.

"Leave."

The man swallowed.

"Boss—"

"Leave."

The associate left.

Nobody spoke.

Then Sebastian said:

"Anyone else who believes abandoning the family is the answer..."

He looked around.

"Leave now."

Nobody moved.

That was the answer.

That night, Clare found Sebastian alone.

Not in his office.

Not in his usual places.

In the old library.

Surrounded by photographs of his family.

"You disappeared."

"I needed quiet."

She looked around.

"Strange."

"What?"

"A man with this much power hiding in a library."

Sebastian looked at the photographs.

"Power doesn't make memories quieter."

She walked beside him.

"This is your father?"

Sebastian nodded.

"Antonio Lombardi."

"You loved him."

"Yes."

The answer was immediate.

"He was complicated."

"Most good people are."

Sebastian looked at her.

"You think he was good?"

"I think nobody is only one thing."

A pause.

"What about you?"

He looked away.

"What about me?"

"Are you only one thing?"

The question stayed.

Because Sebastian knew the answer.

No.

He wasn't.

He was a protector.

A businessman.

A criminal.

A wounded son.

A lonely man.

A person trying to become something better.

The next morning, Oliver disappeared.

For eight minutes.

Only eight.

But those eight minutes almost destroyed Sebastian Lombardi.

It happened inside the safest place in Chicago.

The mansion.

The place where nobody should have been able to enter.

Oliver had been playing in the garden.

A guard looked away.

A camera malfunctioned.

A door opened.

And suddenly...

The boy was gone.

When Clare realized, she screamed.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just one sound.

A mother's worst nightmare.

"Oliver."

Sebastian heard it from across the house.

And something inside him broke.

He moved faster than anyone.

The wheelchair nearly crashed against the walls as he forced himself forward.

"Find him."

His voice was terrifying.

"NOW."

The entire estate moved.

Guards.

Security teams.

Drivers.

Everyone.

But Sebastian did something nobody expected.

He tried to stand.

Gabriel grabbed him.

"Boss."

"Let go."

"You can't."

Sebastian looked at him.

His eyes were filled with something Gabriel had never seen.

Panic.

"I failed him."

"No."

"I failed him."

"You didn't."

"He's a child."

His voice cracked.

"He's just a child."

And Gabriel realized something.

Sebastian Lombardi could face bullets.

He could face enemies.

He could face death.

But he couldn't face losing an innocent child.

They found Oliver twenty minutes later.

Near the old greenhouse.

He wasn't kidnapped.

He wasn't hurt.

He was sitting on the ground.

With someone.

A man.

An old man.

Sebastian froze when he saw him.

Marco Lombardi.

Alive.

Standing ten feet away.

Twenty years of hatred exploded in one moment.

Guards raised weapons.

Sebastian lifted a hand.

"No."

Everyone stopped.

Marco smiled.

"Hello, nephew."

Sebastian stared.

"You."

Marco looked at him.

"Disappointed?"

"You murdered my father."

Marco's expression didn't change.

"I saved this family."

Sebastian laughed.

A cold, empty sound.

"You destroyed it."

Marco looked toward Oliver.

"He looks like you."

Sebastian moved closer.

"Stay away from him."

Marco smiled.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The weakness."

Sebastian's eyes narrowed.

"You think caring makes me weak?"

"I know it does."

Marco stepped closer.

"Your father had the same problem."

"My father was a better man than you."

Marco's smile disappeared slightly.

"You still believe that?"

Sebastian stopped.

"What does that mean?"

Marco looked at him.

"Your father wasn't the hero you think he was."

The words landed.

Sebastian hated that they affected him.

Because a part of him wondered.

"What are you talking about?"

Marco stepped back.

"You'll learn."

Then he looked at Clare.

"And when you do..."

His expression became cold.

"You'll understand why I had to destroy everything."

Marco escaped before anyone could stop him.

Not because he was faster.

Because he had planned everything.

A distraction.

A message.

A psychological attack.

When the police arrived hours later, he was gone.

But he left something behind.

A small box.

Inside was a photograph.

Sebastian's father.

Antonio.

Standing with a group of men.

And beside him...

Was a woman Sebastian had never seen before.

Clare picked up the photograph.

"Who is she?"

Sebastian stared.

He didn't know.

But something about her face felt familiar.

Then he noticed the writing on the back.

A single sentence.

Ask your father why he abandoned his daughter.

Sebastian froze.

"Daughter?"

Gabriel looked confused.

"Boss?"

Sebastian slowly turned the photograph over.

The world seemed to tilt.

Because if Marco was telling the truth...

Then everything Sebastian knew about his family...

Was a lie.

That night, Clare found Sebastian in the garden.

He was sitting alone.

"You haven't moved."

"I can't."

She sat beside him.

"Because you're tired?"

"No."

A pause.

"Because I'm afraid."

Clare looked at him.

"Of Marco?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Sebastian stared into the darkness.

"That everything I lost..."

His voice lowered.

"...was because I never knew the truth."

Clare reached for his hand.

A simple gesture.

But Sebastian froze.

Nobody touched him without fear.

Nobody comforted him without wanting something.

Except her.

"I don't know what tomorrow brings."

She squeezed his hand.

"But you don't have to face it alone."

Sebastian looked at her.

And for the first time in twenty years...

He believed someone.

Across the city, Marco watched from a hidden apartment.

His plan was working.

Sebastian was questioning everything.

His loyalty.

His family.

His identity.

Soon...

He would break.

But Marco didn't understand one thing.

He thought Clare had made Sebastian weaker.

He thought love was a weakness.

He didn't realize the truth.

For twenty years, Sebastian had fought because he wanted revenge.

Now...

May you like

He had something worth protecting.

And that made him more dangerous than ever.
