Chapter 5 - The Glass Greenhouse

The investigation led us to a remote, industrial sector of the Chelsea docks on Wednesday morning. Silas had arranged a private, un-marked armored vehicle for Anna, accompanied by four of the Russo family's most trusted enforcers.

The location was an old, abandoned glass manufacturing plant that had been closed since the late nineties. From the outside, it looked like a rusted, broken monument to old manufacturing. But as Anna stepped through a hidden side door that Silas opened with a crowbar, the temperature inside jumped twenty degrees.

It wasn't a factory anymore. It was a massive, high-tech clandestine greenhouse.

Tiers of hydroponic trays stretched out under intense, purple UV grow lights, the air thick with the humid, tropical smell of damp earth, fertilizer, and a strange, sweet chemical undertone that made Anna’s stomach turn. Hundreds of white-flowered plants grew in neat rows, their roots submerged in circulating nutrient solutions that hissed through plastic tubes.

"My God," Anna whispered, walking up to one of the trays and pulling a small leaf from the stem. "This isn't just hemlock. They’ve cross-bred it with Aconitum—monkshood—and a genetically modified strain of nightshade. This is a production line for chemical assassination."

"Can you trace the supplier of the base nutrients, Miss Carter?" Silas asked, his eyes scanning the dark catwalks above with professional paranoia. "The Boss wants names."

"I don't need to trace the nutrients," Anna said, pointing to a series of large, blue plastic drums in the corner bearing a corporate logo: Wellington Maritime Import/Export. "The chemical stabilizers are coming through the New York transit lines. This greenhouse isn't owned by the Morettis. They're just the distributors. The facility belongs to the Wellington organization."

Suddenly, the overhead UV lights flickered out, plunging the greenhouse into a dim, smoky darkness.

"Ambush!" Silas shouted, drawing his weapon in a single, fluid motion as a volley of automatic gunfire shattered the glass panes of the ceiling above.

Glittering shards of glass rained down like silver snow, slicing through the leaves of the poisonous plants and smashing against the concrete floor. Anna screamed, throwing her arms over her head as Silas grabbed her by the collar of her jacket, dragging her behind a massive iron storage tank.

"Stay down, Miss Carter!" Silas roared over the deafening din of the gunfire.

Two Russo enforcers returned fire, their heavy weapons illuminating the dark greenhouse with short, rhythmic bursts of orange light. Above them on the metal catwalks, three figures in tactical gear were moving quickly, their muzzle flashes cutting through the smoke.

"We’re outnumbered!" one of the enforcers yelled, his shoulder splattering with blood as a bullet tore through his leather jacket. "They knew we were coming!"

Anna pressed her back against the cold iron tank, her heart hammering so hard she could feel it in her teeth. Shards of glass were cutting into her sneakers, and the sweet, poisonous sap of the destroyed hemlock plants was beginning to vaporize in the heat, creating a toxic mist that filled the air.

"Silas!" Anna choked out, coughing as the chemical air hit her lungs. "The plants... the fire from the muzzle flashes is igniting the fertilizer nitrates! We need to get out now! The whole room is going to blow!"

Silas looked up, seeing the small, blue flames beginning to track along the plastic hydroponic tubes where the chemical solutions had leaked. He didn't hesitate. He grabbed Anna by the waist, hoisting her over his shoulder like a sack of grain, and turned toward the rear loading dock door.

"Fall back!" Silas roared to the remaining men. "Go! Go!"

We burst through the metal fire exit into the freezing morning air just as a massive, orange fireball exploded behind us, blowing the glass windows of the factory outward in a spectacular, roaring wave of heat and light. The concussion wave threw us onto the gravel of the yard, the sound of twisting steel and breaking glass echoing across the water.

Anna lay on the gravel, gasping for fresh air, her hands scraped and bleeding from the sharp stones.

A sleek, black Mercedes SUV tore into the yard, its tires screaming on the wet asphalt. The passenger door flew open before the vehicle had even come to a complete stop, and Dante Russo leaped out into the rain.

He didn't look at the burning factory. He didn't look at Silas or the wounded enforcers. He sprinted straight toward Anna, throwing himself onto his knees on the wet gravel and pulling her up into his arms with a desperate, crushing intensity.

"Anna!" he roared, his voice thick with a terror she had never heard from him before. He caught her face in his hands, his thumbs frantically wiping the soot and blood from her forehead. "Are you hurt? Look at me, piccola. Look at me!"

"I’m... I’m okay," Anna stammered, her body shivering against his warm chest. "The Wellingtons... Dante, it’s the Wellingtons. They're working with the Morettis."

Dante didn't answer. He simply pulled her tighter against his chest, his hand resting on the back of her head, his breathing ragged against her shoulder. For the second time, Anna felt the immense, terrifying safety of his embrace—a safety that was beginning to feel less like a professional contract and more like something she never wanted to let go of.
