Chapter 7 - The Masterstroke

The door behind the acoustic divider opened, and Vance Sterling walked out into the light, holding a sleek black tablet connected to the room's recording interface. Beside him walked Marcus Cole, wearing a tailored navy coat and holding a leather folder stamped with the seal of a licensed private investigation agency.

Lorraine jumped back, her face turning pale as paper. "Who are these people?"

"You know Vance Sterling, Lorraine," I said, rising slowly from my chair without holding onto the armrests, standing tall and straight before them. "He’s the man who protected my father’s legacy from vultures twenty years ago. And this is Marcus Cole. He’s the man who spent the last seventy-two hours tracking every cent of the $450,000 you, Sable, and Corbin stole from my firm."

"This... this is an outrage!" Sable shrieked, backing toward the front door. "Corbin, what is this?"

Corbin stood frozen, staring at Vance in absolute terror. "Vance... this is a private family matter."

"It was a private family matter," Vance said calmly, setting his tablet on the table, "until you executed a fraudulent power-of-attorney filing at 8:30 AM on Monday morning while your wife was undergoing open-heart surgery. That, Mr. Ashgrove, is grand larceny, wire fraud, and forgery under state criminal code."

"I signed nothing!" Corbin yelled, pointing an accusatory finger at me. "The authorization form was pre-signed!"

"It was a scanned signature copy taken from an internal employment contract," Marcus Cole interjected, pulling a certified forensic document analysis sheet from his folder. "We’ve already submitted the digital metadata to the State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Division. The timestamp proves the signature was digitally spliced onto the medical declaration at 8:12 AM on August 4th."

Lorraine’s hands began to shake violently. She turned on her son, her honeyed composure completely disintegrated into raw, venomous panic. "Corbin! You told me she had signed the original authorization in July!"

"She did!" Corbin lied frantically. "She gave me verbal permission!"

"I gave you nothing," I said, my voice echoing off the high wooden ceiling. "You relied on my death, Corbin. You sat in your mother’s dining room at five in the morning, drinking champagne and eating smoked salmon while I was riding to the hospital alone in a stranger’s car. You told the nurses I had no family. You left an empty chair beside my bed, waiting for the surgeon to come out and tell you my heart had failed."

"Marlo, no!" Corbin cried, taking a step toward me, his hands raised in supplication. "That’s not true! I love you! Mom planned that brunch months ago, I couldn't cancel it! I was terrified for you!"

"You were so terrified," I said, pointing out the window at the driveway, "that your sister bought a Porsche with my company’s payroll reserves forty-eight hours later."

Sable burst into frantic tears. "I didn't know! Corbin said it was a performance bonus from his new consulting contract!"

"Shut up, Sable!" Lorraine roared, swinging her handbag toward her daughter before whipping back around to face me. "Marlo, listen to me. We can resolve this quietly. We are family. If you launch a public suit, it will ruin Corbin’s career! It will ruin all of us!"

"You ruined yourselves the moment you treated my life as an expiration date," I said coldly.

Vance stepped forward, opening his briefcase and pulling out three bound legal documents, dropping them onto the coffee table beside the untouched pastries.

"These are your options," Vance announced in a dry, matter-of-fact tone.

"First: Corbin Ashgrove will immediately sign a voluntary, unconditional confession of corporate embezzlement and surrender all administrative titles and shares in Ashgrove Architectural Restorations."

"Second: He will execute an emergency quitclaim deed renouncing any and all marital claims to Oakridge House and all secondary properties owned by the Ashgrove estate."

"Third: Lorraine and Sable Voss will execute an immediate wire restitution agreement returning $405,000 to Ashgrove Restorations within twenty-four hours, using their personal assets as collateral."

Lorraine gasped. "And if we refuse?"

"If you refuse," Vance said, checking his watch, "at 12:00 PM today—which is precisely seventeen minutes from now—Marcus will deliver this digital recording along with the financial forensic audit to the District Attorney's office. Corbin will be arrested for felony wire fraud before dinner. And Lorraine, as a listed corporate officer of Voss Global Ventures, will be named as an unindicted co-conspirator in an active criminal investigation."

"You can't do this!" Lorraine screamed, her voice cracking into a shrill screech. "You can't destroy my family over a financial misunderstanding!"

"It wasn't a misunderstanding, Lorraine," I said, stepping right up to her, looking down into her panicked face. "It was preparation. You planned around my death. But you never planned for my return."
