Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Oak Street

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was an ocean of gold leaf, white orchids, and the absolute highest tier of Chicago wealth. Five hundred people in tuxedos and evening gowns moved beneath chandeliers that had survived the Great Fire, their conversations a low, rhythmic murmur of stock prices and winter vacations in Aspen.

Gregory Pierce stood near the central ice sculpture, a crystal glass of champagne held loosely in his white-gloved hand. His blond hair was immaculate, his charcoal tuxedo cut to within a millimeter of perfection, but his eyes were twitching with a frantic, nervous energy.

"The underwriters are satisfied, Gregory," Evelyn Pierce murmured, stepping up beside him in an emerald gown that looked like a snake's skin. Her diamonds clicked against her throat as she spoke. "The Lakeshore file has been sealed by court order. The girl has vanished. Our legal team confirmed her phone was found in a storm drain near the river yesterday morning. The police are treating it as an accidental drowning."

Gregory swallowed hard, his eyes scanning the crowd. "We shouldn't have left her without a coat, Mother. The rain... if someone finds the body before the IPO clears—"

"No one is finding a body, Gregory," Evelyn hissed, her voice a sharp, venomous whisper. "She was a waitress from Evanston with no family and no leverage. The city is full of tragic women who step off the curb in bad weather. Focus on the underwriters. If the Black Sea contract isn't finalized tonight, the banks will call our secondary line of credit by Monday."

"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies’ voice boomed across the ballroom, interrupting the music. "Please welcome the Chairman of Falco Enterprises, Mr. Gabriel Falco."

The heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

The room didn't just go quiet; it seemed to lose its oxygen entirely.

Gabriel Falco walked in, his black velvet tuxedo moving with the slow, predatory grace of an emperor entering a conquered province. But it wasn't Gabriel who made the champagne glass slip from Gregory Pierce’s fingers to shatter against the marble floor.

Walking beside Gabriel, her hand resting elegantly on his arm, was Clara Hayes.

She wore a custom-made, midnight-blue silk evening gown that highlighted, rather than hid, the clear, beautiful six-month curve of her pregnant belly. Her dark hair was styled into a high, aristocratic twist, held in place by a diamond comb that had belonged to Gabriel’s grandmother. Her feet, healed and steady, were dressed in silver heels that made no sound as she stepped onto the parquet floor.

She didn't look like a victim. She looked like the woman who owned the room.

"My God," Gregory gasped, his face turning a sickly, translucent shade of green. "She’s... she’s alive."

Evelyn Pierce’s hand tightened around her champagne glass until the crystal cracked, a thin line of red blood appearing against her pale skin. "The bitch," she whispered. "How did she get into Falco’s car?"

The Confrontation beneath the Gold Leaf

Gabriel and Clara moved through the crowd like an advanced guard, the guests parting before them in an absolute, shocked silence. Everyone in the room knew Clara had been Gregory’s fiancée; everyone in the room had heard the quiet, malicious rumors Evelyn had circulated over the weekend about Clara’s "sudden mental breakdown and departure."

They stopped three feet away from the Pierce family ice sculpture.

"Gregory," Clara said, her voice smooth, calm, and perfectly carrying to the surrounding tables. "You look surprised to see me. Did you think your mother’s lawyers had already completed the paperwork for my erasure?"

"Clara... what is the meaning of this?" Gregory stammered, his eyes darting to Gabriel, who stood beside her like an executioner waiting for the signal. "You... you left. The clinic report—"

"The clinic report is currently being reviewed by the State Medical Board’s fraud division, Gregory," Gabriel Falco said, his voice a low, beautiful rumble that made three nearby underwriters turn their heads. "Along with the IP addresses of the user tokens that generated it from the Pierce Global internal server."

Evelyn stepped forward, her emerald gown rustling like dry grass. "Mr. Falco, this is a private family matter. You are trespassing on a corporate celebration. Leave this ballroom immediately before I have security remove you."

"Your security guards are currently being re-badged by Falco Logistics, Evelyn," Gabriel said, taking a slow sip from a glass of water a passing waiter had offered him. "I bought the building’s primary service contract at four o'clock this afternoon. If your men try to touch anyone in this room, they’ll be arrested for criminal trespassing on my property."

Clara looked at Gregory, her emerald eyes boring into his soul with an absolute, terrifying finality. She reached into her small, silver evening clutch and pulled out a small, metallic object that caught the gold light of the chandeliers.

The silver thumb drive. Gregory’s anniversary gift.

"I went back to the penthouse while you were at dinner, Gregory," Clara whispered, her lips curving into a cold, beautiful smile. "The decryption keys for the Black Sea manifests are already inside Gabriel’s secure server. The underwriters have thirty minutes to withdraw their IPO backing before the federal indictment becomes public record."

Gregory took a step back, his hand flying to his throat as the world he had built on the suffering of a barefoot woman began to slide into the Chicago mud.
