Chapter 3 - The Digital Paper Trail

By 1:00 PM, the atmosphere around Northstar Logistics had deteriorated into absolute chaos.
While Grant was frantically trying to secure a high-priced criminal defense lawyer for Vanessa Hale, Detective Lena Ortiz was executing a search warrant at the corporate headquarters of Apex Procurement Solutions in downtown Columbus.
I sat in a private conference room on the fourth floor of the hospital with Detective Ortiz and Special Agent Marcus Brody from the state’s financial crimes unit. On the table lay printed transcripts of digital access logs, cell tower pings, and surveillance camera stills.
"Mrs. Mercer," Detective Ortiz began, opening a blue folder. "We’ve established a clear timeline of events from yesterday morning."
She laid down three photographs.
"At 10:42 AM, Vanessa Hale arrived at the Northstar fleet garage in her personal sedan," Ortiz explained, pointing to a high-resolution security camera frame. "At 10:48 AM, your husband’s executive master clearance code was entered into the key kiosk. Vehicle three-zero-two—a heavy-duty silver Ford Expedition—was released to her."
"Did Grant enter the code himself?" I asked.
"No," Agent Brody interjected. "The garage camera shows Vanessa Hale using a digital key fob cloned directly from Grant’s phone. At 11:34 AM, three miles away, vehicle three-zero-two entered the pedestrian crosswalk on Elm Street at forty miles per hour—fifteen miles over the speed limit. It struck Lily, mounted the curb, and sped away without braking."
I swallowed the lump in my throat, forcing myself to look at the traffic camera screenshot showing the silver SUV speeding off into the distance.
"What did she do with the vehicle?" I demanded.
"She drove directly to an industrial body shop in East Columbus owned by her brother," Ortiz revealed. "She left the SUV inside the bay to be wiped for fingerprints and prepped for deep body repair. Then she called Grant."
Agent Brody slid a text-message transcript across the table.
Vanessa: Grant, emergency. I hit something near the school district. The front bumper is smashed. I used 302. You need to clear the log NOW.
Grant: Where are you? Is anyone hurt?
Vanessa: I don't know! Some kid stepped out! Just mark the vehicle as stolen or out for private maintenance! If the police track this to Apex, my contracts are gone!
Grant: Stay calm. I’m marking 302 as 'In Transit - Internal Service.' Meet me at the hotel downtown. I’ll bring my laptop.
I stared at the black-and-white printout of the text exchange. Timestamps showed Grant had received those messages while sitting right next to me in the surgical waiting room while Lily was under anesthesia.
He knew.
He didn't just help Vanessa after the fact; he knew she had hit a child near a school, and he chose to cover it up before he even bothered to check if his own daughter was the victim.
"This constitutes conspiracy to commit hit-and-run, obstruction of justice, and evidence tampering," Agent Brody stated firmly. "When we combine this with the forged fleet clearance logs and the fraudulent insurance claims Grant filed at 2:00 PM yesterday, Mr. Mercer is facing multiple felony indictments."
"When are you arresting them?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.
"Vanessa Hale was taken into custody thirty minutes ago at her boutique," Ortiz said. "She was mid-sentence ordering custom drapes when we handcuffed her. As for Grant..." She looked at her watch. "We are serving the arrest warrant at Northstar’s emergency board meeting at 2:30 PM."
I stood up, pulling my jacket over my shoulders. "I want to be there."
Eleanor, who sat beside me, offered a supportive smile. "I’ve already arranged for us to enter the board meeting as representatives of the Mercer Family Estate Trust, which owns thirty-five percent of Northstar’s voting shares."
At 2:25 PM, the glass-walled executive boardroom on the top floor of Northstar Tower was filled with anxious board members, department heads, and legal advisors. Grant sat at the head of the long oak table, frantically trying to project an air of calm authority.
"Gentlemen, ladies," Grant said, tapping his microphone. "The recent rumors regarding fleet anomalies are entirely unfounded. Apex Procurement remains our primary vendor, and I assure you that our Q3 earnings—"
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
I walked in first, flanked by Eleanor Vance. Behind us walked Detective Ortiz, Agent Brody, and four uniformed police officers.
The room went dead silent.
Grant stood up, his face pale. "Clara? What is the meaning of this? This is a private board meeting!"
"Not anymore, Grant," I said, stepping up to the foot of the table. "As the legal trustee of the Mercer Estate Trust, I have initiated an emergency freeze on all company credit guarantees. And as the mother of Lily Mercer, I am here to watch you answer for what you’ve done."
Detective Ortiz walked straight up the length of the boardroom table, stopping directly beside Grant. She pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt.
"Grant Mercer, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit a hit-and-run involving serious bodily injury, obstruction of justice, insurance fraud, and evidence tampering," Ortiz announced loudly, her voice echoing off the glass walls.
The board members gasped. Two directors pulled out their phones, frantically texting their corporate advisors.
"This is a mistake!" Grant shouted, stepping back, his hands trembling. "You don't understand! My wife is setting me up! She’s mad about a personal marital dispute!"
"We have your text messages, Mr. Mercer," Agent Brody said calmly, reaching over and clicking the steel cuffs around Grant’s wrists. "We have the cloned key fob logs. We have the body shop confession from Vanessa Hale’s brother. And we have the CCTV footage of you marking vehicle three-zero-two as stolen while your daughter was in surgery."
Grant thrashing against the officers' grip, his eyes wildly searching the room for help. But every single board member looked away, disgust and contempt clear on their faces.
As the officers turned him toward the exit, Grant’s eyes locked onto mine.
"Clara! Please!" he begged, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. "Think of our family! Think of my reputation! If I go to jail, who is going to provide for Lily?!"

I looked at him with absolute detachment.
"Lily doesn't need a coward who abandons her when she bleeds," I said softly, loud enough for every board member to hear. "She has me. And you... you have Vanessa."
