Chapter 7 - Night of Fire

At 9:30 p.m., the power grid across Cedar Hollow suddenly collapsed.

The streetlights on Main Street flickered once, twice, and died, plunging the town into pitch-black darkness, broken only by the heavy flashes of lightning overhead.

Inside Miller’s Bakery, three oil lanterns illuminated the kitchen with a soft, warm amber glow.

Thomas Miller sat at the kitchen table, fast asleep from exhaustion, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket.

In the small back storage room, Rocco was systematically preparing for war. He had stripped down to a black tactical turtleneck, combat trousers, and heavy boots he had salvaged from the unconscious enforcers earlier that afternoon. On the wooden table before him lay three shotguns, four handguns, and two tactical knives.

Clara walked into the room, carrying two mugs of hot tea. She set them down silently on the table.

She looked at the weapons, then looked up at Rocco’s dark, solemn profile.

"They're coming tonight, aren't they?" she asked softly.

Rocco looked at her. In the flickering amber light of the lantern, her face was ethereal, her dark eyes filled with a brave, tragic beauty that made his chest ache.

"Yes," Rocco said flatly. "My cousin Marco is here. My uncle sent him to finish what he started thirty years ago."

"You could have left," Clara said, her voice barely above a whisper. "You could have taken your money, your power, and gone anywhere in the world. Why did you stay here, Rocco? Why stay for us?"

Rocco stood up slowly. He stepped closer to her, stopping just inches away.

For thirty-four years, Rocco Castellano had lived in a world where love was a weakness, where human connection was a transaction, and where keeping people was the only way to avoid being abandoned.

He reached out, his thick, calloused fingers gently cupping her soft cheek.

"Because for four hours," Rocco said gently, his voice rough with deep emotion, "nobody looked at my face. Only you. You knelt down in the mud, Clara. You gave me bread when I was nothing. You gave me an answer to a question I've been asking my whole life."

Clara leaned her face into his warm palm, tears glistening in her eyes. "What question?"

"Whether I was capable of being loved," Rocco whispered softly.

Clara reached up, her small hands gently wrapping around his neck. She pulled him down, pressing her lips softly against his in a deep, sweet, intoxicating kiss that tasted of rain and warm honey.

Rocco held her tight against his broad chest, feeling her heartbeat thumping wildly against his ribs. For the first time in his life, he wasn't keeping someone. He was loving her.

The moment was shattered by the sound of glass breaking in the front room, followed by the heavy, ominous scent of gasoline pouring through the floorboards.

Rocco pulled back, his eyes instantly turning back into liquid steel.

"Take your father," Rocco commanded, pulling a loaded 9mm pistol from his belt and pressing it into Clara’s hands. "Go into the flour cellar beneath the kitchen floor. Lock the iron door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me."

Clara gripped the heavy steel pistol, nodding fiercely. "Stay alive, Rocco. Please."

"Always," he whispered.
